Tips for Healthy Travel

Hit up local grocery stores

Grocery Stores can be a great alternative to fast food when you are travelling. Pass on by the fast food & chain restaurants and go to supermarkets and grocery stores. Grocery stores have prepackaged fruits and veggies, sandwiches, salads, etc. You can quickly grab a bite to eat without inhaling tons of unneccessary calories in the process. Just because you are on vacation, does not mean you need to eat every fried object in site.

Look at what the locals are eating

Look Around to see what others are eating, when you walk into a restaurant. You can always ask other patrons of the establishment about their meal choices, but most people are not comfortable doing that... so just look around and take a look at portion sizes, etc. As a general rule, NEVER eat anything that will get you a free shirt or get your picture on the wall under the "greatest eaters of all time" sign.

Keep working out...

Go on vacation but don't turn into a slug... keep working out. You know you are going to indulge while you are travelling, so even if you don't have a gym near by... you need get some excercise. One good way to do this is to use the location to determine your excercise routine. Go for a walk on the beach, Hike if your in the mountains, run if you like to run... just stay active. You may need to hire trainers to kick your butt into shape. Just don't be one of those people that comes home from vacation 10lbs heavier.

Dine In More Often

Eat in more often to curb the caloric intake. Many times the room with the kitchen is more expensive, but you can save a lot of money by eating in rather than eating out every meal. Get a room with a balcony and a view... this will make you WANT to eat in. You can save a lot of money (and calories) by spending a little more money on your room. You will choose food more wisely, when you are going to be preparing it. Get some great food, wine, and relax on your patio with an ocean view.

Stay on a Schedule

Eat at normal Mealtimes to keep your body (and metabolism) on a normal routine. If you keep a normal eating schedule, you can avoid the last minute "i'm starving to death" trip to the fast food joint.

Wander off...

Stay off the main drag and explore side streets to find great local dining. Eat more small meals throughout the day and avoid the twice-a-day binge at the local buffet. You can often get early bird specials or split meals with your travel companion to minimize caloric intake on your vacations... This will allow you to sample more of the local fare in the process.
